Catalyst in BMW, issues and repair in gasoline vehicles

The BMW automobile catalytic converter is a colloquial term for a catalytic neutralizer that is part of the exhaust system, with the task of reducing the amount of harmful compounds in the exhaust.

Catalysts have been used for many years, and their presence in the exhaust system is ensured by the rules (EURO standards). In addition to purifying exhaust gases from harmful substances, the catalyst ensures the achievement of expected power and torque parameters in the engine. DPF filters are used in vehicles with diesel engines, which we have described in a separate article.

Causes of BMW Catalytic Converter Damage

The catalytic converter is most often located in the lower parts of the chassis. Therefore, it is susceptible to mechanical damage due to overload on terrain obstacles. Its sudden cooling, for example, as a result of immersion in a deep puddle, can also lead to irreversible damage.

In addition, the service life of a BMW catalytic converter is determined at the design and production stage. Usually, this is around 200,000 kilometers. Taking into account the average age and mileage of vehicles in the CIS countries, this limit has already been exceeded.

The expected service life of the catalyst for the design also depends on its proper operation. This means using:

  • appropriate fuel,
  • matching engine oil,
  • effective ignition and fuel system.

Any malfunction of these systems negatively affects the operation of the BMW catalytic converter and, therefore, leads to exceeding combustion norms.

Ways to Repair a Catalytic Converter

  • Replacing the catalytic converter with a new one — guaranteed by the Munich manufacturer and highest cost.
  • Replacing the catalytic converter with an analog — manufacturer's warranty, cooperating with BMW. Moderate cost, with the same quality as original parts.
  • Catalytic converter regeneration — reliability depends on the degree of catalyst consumption. The cost is the lowest, but it involves «grounding» the vehicle for several days.

Removing the Catalytic Converter in BMW

We deliberately omitted the method of removing it, which some car owners do. The technical consequences are primarily changes in engine operation parameters.

Sensors transmit data to the engine control unit, adjusting fuel doses. The result is a reduction in power and activation of emergency mode. Newer models equipped with turbochargers may damage them.
