Test Drive: Cadillac XT5 vs. BMW X3

The premium class can produce not only luxurious sedans or serious SUVs. Crossovers can also appear in the premium segment, such as the Cadillac XT5 and BMW X3. This is not a very common phenomenon, but also not rare in the modern car market. Moreover, a crossover in Russia is a solution to some problems associated with road surfaces.

Both cars look unconventional, and their interior designs do not mimic each other, each having its own unique features. The individuality of both brands is preserved, but it is evident that they did not try to outdo each other in details. There is no artificiality or excess that can be encountered in fierce competitive battles.

The Cadillac XT5 looks like it demands attention with its every appearance. You can't just pass by it.

Its exterior design features sharp angles and strict lines, the Cadillac's ruggedness and originality can be seen from afar. This appearance is complemented by massive bumpers, and the picture is completed by the LED headlights and vertical running lights. The appearance of the XT5 is less classic or traditional.

Despite being a crossover and a premium one, the XT5 handles well on challenging roads, even on unpaved ones. Some features can be attributed to SUV properties.

BMW never deviates from its main style, and the X3 clearly exhibits the brand's signature features in its appearance. The main distinctions of BMW have always been the headlights, the shape of the radiator grille, and the sporty body lines.

Although the BMW has a higher ground clearance compared to the Cadillac, driving on uneven terrains may not be as comfortable, as the overhangs of the body can create obstacles that might be damaged.

The interior space of both models is presented equally. The rear bench accommodates two tall passengers. The bench can fit more than two people, but comfort will be compromised.

The front seats are equipped with side support, ventilation, and power adjustment. Driving in the car is maximally comfortable.

The finishing materials are far from cheap. Both manufacturers took care of the fitting of the details, but BMW paid more attention to this issue. The German elements of control were also not overlooked; all car control buttons are placed as organically and intuitively as possible.

The American model's interior looks much simpler, with functionality located in the multimedia unit with a touchscreen that operates somewhat sluggishly. It does not respond promptly to commands.

The German model features a virtual instrument panel with proper backlighting, allowing information to be read without difficulty. The American model has arrow-shaped instruments, with the LCD compartment of the onboard computer in the center.

It displays speedometer readings, fuel level indication, compass, and coolant temperature. Even though this design is practically useless, it looks impressive.

Equipped with a two-liter turbo engine producing 249 horsepower, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive, the BMW X3 impresses. The engine is inline.

The acceleration of the car takes on a thrilling form of drive. Credit should be given to the turbocharged power unit. It responds instantly and provides excellent traction, resulting in instant fuel delivery.

The closely spaced gear range of the automatic transmission deserves special attention. Its performance is reflected in the excellent algorithm and quick gear shifts.

The handling stability of the German car is suitable even for very active drivers. Turns of any complexity do not intimidate it, with no noticeable tilting, skidding, or atypical car behavior. The stabilization system starts working from the very beginning and prevents the occurrence of emergency situations.

A minor drawback of the German crossover is its stiff suspension. Germans are not very accustomed to poor road surfaces. Irregularities in the pavement will be noticeable, even small ones, but it won't cause discomfort for passengers or the driver.

The Cadillac XT5 is equipped with an atmospheric power unit, a 3.6-liter engine with 314 horsepower, V-shaped. It is complemented by an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The engine is decent, but at high speeds, it does not perform as well as at medium or low speeds. As a result, the car's acceleration is not impressive, and the automatic transmission takes a while to respond. Overtaking enthusiasts will have to get used to it, as this flaw in the gearbox is noticeable only during rapid acceleration.

The handling of the American car is excellent for standard driving, but if the driver decides to take a turn at high speed, they may feel the car's reluctance to turn. At high speeds, body tilts are felt. The steering wheel is not as sensitive as that of the X3, reacting with delayed response to movements.

In terms of suspension, the Cadillac outperforms the BMW as it is significantly softer and better at smoothing out surface irregularities. The Cadillac is not designed for fast driving and racing. This crossover is for a more noble, measured, and majestic driving experience.

Inline engines are more reliable, and despite the horsepower, it would be better to opt for the inline engine of the Bavarian car.

Both cars have five doors, folding rear seats, and spacious trunks (550 for BMW, 850 for Cadillac). The car dimensions do not differ significantly, but the BMW is slightly narrower. The suspension of both cars is spring, independent. The braking system is presented with ventilated disc brakes.

Configurations and Prices of Cadillac XT5 and BMW X3

The Cadillac XT5 offers three trim levels. The price starts at 2,890 thousand rubles and ends at 3,690 thousand rubles.

BMW does not have a wide range of configurations and offers the xDrive30i M Sport to car enthusiasts, to which certain packages and additions can be made. The starting price for the base variant is 3,790 thousand rubles.

In essence, buying the American car is cheaper than the German one. However, BMW already offers many interesting features in the basic version that may attract the buyer, without the need to complement the car.

Cadillac has always put forward interesting proposals. Besides the appearance, the XT5 model offers excellent suspension. But for drivers preferring fast and active driving, the German-made X3 would be more suitable.
