Not long ago, the Bavarian automotive concern presented the new BMW 5 Series. At the same time, the company decided to cease production of a number of vehicles. The brand stopped the production of models F11 and F10.
The relevance of the updated lineup will be maintained throughout 2018 and 2019. In 2020, the company plans to carry out a minor facelift, however, the exact release date of such models is not yet known. The new BMW 5 Series possesses unique features. The car looks stylish, performs dynamically on the road, and has a high level of technological advancement.
Key Information on the Update
The company decided to follow an evolutionary path of development. In 2018, the brand ceased the production of F10 and F11. Instead, the company began offering the updated 5 Series. Significant changes took place. First and foremost, the company worked on the body of the vehicle.
The new BMW 5 Series in appearance resembles more a premium 7 Series. The Bavarians endowed the modified model with an excellent combination of price and quality. By this parameter, the presented car is considered the best in the lineup. The exterior has become more premium and expensive.
The differences are not only in getting closer to a more expensive version but also in a significant distancing from the previous generations of the 5 Series. Classic E39, E60, or E34 models look more simplified against the new model.
BMW 5 Series Models
Fans of the Bavarian automotive concern know that with each series update, manufacturers release several types of cars. All models are unique. They have their own technical features, character, and purpose. The new BMW 5 Series did not escape this trend.
The brand conducted comprehensive work. The concern did not produce regular facelift versions. It completely changed the name, added a range of options to the car. At the same time, each model in the series is positioned as a more technologically advanced alternative to the previous ones.
The most interesting versions of the new BMW 5 Series are:
- BMW 5 Series GT;
- BMW 5 Series (G31) Touring;
- BMW 5 Series G30.
The G30 and GT models are produced in a sedan body. The Touring car is manufactured as an estate. Apart from the body shape, this vehicle does not differ from the G30.
Overall, each car has its own functional content. They differ in their ultimate purpose. At the same time, the owner can make necessary changes at any time to improve any characteristics of the car.
Features of the 2018—2019 Models

In terms of operational characteristics, this model is the leader of the entire 5 Series. The luxurious interior will perfectly emphasize the owner's status. At the same time, manufacturers have managed to strike a balance between sporty dynamics and executive comfort. The car is agile but not rigid. Strong shaking in the cabin is excluded.
The main feature of the model is the presence of 4 types of engines. The car went on sale with both petrol and diesel power units:
- 2-liter diesel with a power of 190 horsepower.
- 3-liter diesel with a power of 265 horsepower.
- 2-liter petrol with a power of 252 horsepower.
- 3-liter petrol with a power of 340 horsepower.
Petrol variations are more powerful, but diesel ones are considered more economical. The driver will save on fuel, tax, and insurance.
BMW 5 Series (G31) Touring
This variant of the new BMW 5 Series is designed as an estate. The five-door car is built on the CLAR modular platform. The peculiarity of the body is the active use of high-strength steel alloys. The panels themselves are made of lightweight aluminum. These solutions allowed the company to reduce the weight of the car by about 100 kg.
The main advantage of the G31 is the spacious boot compartment. In its normal state, its volume reaches 570 liters. However, folding the rear seat back triples this parameter.
The rear pneumatic suspension is equipped with a height adjustment function. This option allows for an increase in the mass of transported items. Among all the new BMW 5 Series, the G31 stands out for its high load capacity.
The model is available on the market with four different engine options. Their type, power indicators, and volume are the same as those of the GT.
The G31 comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A manual gearbox is only available on the version with a 2-liter diesel engine.
To improve the quality and safety of movement, the presented model is equipped with:
- bi-xenon optics;
- rain and light sensors;
- additional stabilization system;
- 6 safety airbags;
- standard navigation;
- alloy wheels.
By paying extra, the owner will receive an extended package of options. It includes electric seat adjustment, massage system, parktronic, leather interior trim, improved sound system, and adaptive cruise control.
To enhance the safety of movement, manufacturers equipped the model with a frontal collision warning system. The new BMW 5 Series G31 has become even more stable and reliable.
However, Russian motorists will not be able to enjoy the full quality and reliability of this car. The model is not sold here. The reason is the lack of demand. Such a body type is unpopular among our compatriots.
Only 12 people bought the previous model. Meanwhile, BMW imported over 14,000 estates to Russia. Because of this, the Bavarians decided not to supply the G31 to the domestic market at all.

BMW 5 Series G30
The new BMW 5 Series G30 has increased in size, as it was built on the same platform as the 7 Series. However, this is not the only difference from the previous generation F10. The main feature of the model is its premium exterior look. The sedan more closely resembles an executive-class car.
A significant external change in the model is the enlargement of the radiator grille. The headlights have also undergone changes. Manufacturers slightly narrowed their central part. This design made the car more aggressive and sporty.
There are no significant technical differences between G30, G31, and GT. The presented model is equipped with the same type of engines. G30 has both all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive versions. Naturally, the latter are cheaper.
However, BMW plans to carry out a facelift on the G30 in 2020. The new BMW 5 Series of this type will receive an expanded range of engines. Engineers decided not to deviate from the trends accepted in modern car manufacturing and added a 113-horsepower electric motor to the version with a 3-liter engine.
The fuel consumption of this modification is just over 2 liters per 100 km of travel. On average, it is 2.5 times lower than that of other series representatives. The range on one electric charge is small. The car can cover only 50-70 km. The final figure depends on the driving speed.
The cheapest new sedan G30 will cost owners 3 million rubles. The fully-equipped version costs 7.9 million rubles.

With each new update, the differences between the cars become more and more pronounced. At the same time, the price of the new BMW 5 Series fully corresponds to their technical and operational characteristics. Overpayments are excluded solely for the brand and prestige of the mark in this case.
The models have become an excellent example of a versatile car. They look good, reach decent speeds, and demonstrate confident handling. The new 5 Series became one of the main surprises of the company in 2018 and 2019.
