Legendary BMW 8 E31

The BMW 8 E31 models were produced and released from 1989 to 1999. They came with new V12 engines at 5.0 liters, with 295 horsepower, and were priced at 100,000 British pounds. However, the public did not warmly receive them because of the high cost, wanting more value for their money. Although these two-ton metal machines had an acceleration of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 230 miles per hour.

Developers listened to customer feedback and in 1992 added the 850CSI with 5.6 V12 engines, producing 375 horsepower, and the 840CI with 4.0 V8 engines, offering 282 horsepower.

Then came the good news for customers about the introduction of the 8 Series coupe. While they were not perfect machines, they found their admirers. It became a cult classic. However, at that time, it faced harsh criticism due to its heaviness, bulkiness, and complexity. The development of this model continued for 10 years, leading to the unveiling of the BMW 840Ci.

**Exterior**

The profiles of the BMW 8 E31 had long, low-sloping hood outlines that narrowed towards the front of the car. The elongated hoods with pop-up headlights resembled shark-like faces. The cars featured two Bavarian radiator grilles, easily recognizable but not oversized. The Bavarians, while working on the design, aimed to showcase clear lines while reducing aerodynamic resistance. This was achieved through small details like the wipers, perfectly suited for these long hoods.

**Headlights of BMW 8 E31**

The retractable headlights were a bold choice by the Bavarians, reducing aerodynamic losses and allowing for quick acceleration and increased top speed.

**Pillars**

There were no side pillars, indicating that the cars belonged to the classic coupe category. This did not affect the internal functionality or safety in any way. Seatbelt fastenings were directly attached to the front seats, ensuring the passengers' and drivers' safety even in serious accidents.

**Bumpers**

Small spoilers on the front bumpers helped achieve a frontal drag coefficient of 0.29, exceptional for that time, positively impacting the car's dynamics along with the folding headlights.

**Engines of BMW 8 E31**

The BMW 840 Ci Sport with 4.4L engines worked with V8 motors producing 282 horsepower and five-speed automatic transmissions. The power was transmitted to the rear extended wheels, providing better grip on the road surfaces.

The suspension elements were strengthened to reduce body roll and ensure sharp handling. The turn keys had two marks, a characteristic feature of BMW's familiar instrument cluster. The whirring of the fuel pumps occurred in the background during their operation.

**Conclusion**

The BMW 8 E31 cars boasted unique shapes, technologies, performance, and rarity. They, like the BMW 8 G15, offered precise handling, obedient driving, stability, sharp turns, encapsulating everything one could say about these legendary machines.
