The engines have variable valve timing.

The powerful petrol engines in the 640i all-wheel drive models have three liters and twin turbochargers. They come with a 24-valve system with mechanically adjustable valve timing. Generating 340 hp, 450 Nm of torque, accelerating in 5.3 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h, and consuming 8.6 liters per 100 km in mixed cycles.

The xDrive 630d diesel models are equipped with three-liter inline engines, with direct injection, turbocharging, and 24 valves. They produce 249 hp, 620 Nm of torque, accelerate in 6 seconds, reach a top speed of 250 km/h, and consume 5.5 liters in mixed cycles.

The 640d cars have three-liter engines producing 320 hp, 680 Nm of torque, accelerate in 5.3 seconds, have a top speed of 250 km/h, and consume 6.5 liters per 100 km in mixed cycles.
