BMW X1 — the smallest car in the family of Bavarian SUVs. The first generation, marked as E84, debuted in 2009. Stylistically, the car was related to the 1 Series and the larger X3, and was structurally linked to the 3 Series E90.
BMW X1 Specifications
Thanks to its compact size (4457 mm in length, 1789 mm in width, and 1535 mm in height), the car performs well in the city but is also capable in off-road conditions. The 5-door body has a pleasant proportional line, with sharper lines adding dynamism. At the front, we find the characteristic black BMW «grille.»
Interior
The interior of the BMW X1 closely resembles the cabins of other models from Munich. Order and lack of glamour prevail. The car can accommodate 5 people and 420 liters of luggage, however, tall individuals in the rear seats may complain about the lack of space. Folding the rear seat will expand the trunk by an additional 930 liters.
The basic equipment (including onboard computer, central lock, manual air conditioning, electric windows, and 4 airbags) is decent, but in a premium SUV, we may feel unsatisfied.
BMW X1 Engines
Under the hood, we can find both gasoline and diesel engines. The weakest gasoline engine is a 2-liter engine with 150 hp, while the most emotional experience will come from the 3-liter «six» with 258 hp.
The most powerful 2-liter diesel engine develops 204 hp. The wheels are driven by rear-wheel or all-wheel drive (xDrive) using a 6-speed manual transmission or 6- and 8-speed automatic transmissions.
The weakest engine is the BMW 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine which delivers 136 hp. More powerful engines are the 2-liter units with 192 or 231 hp. The diesel engines are 2-liter engines in 3 power variations — 150, 190, and 231 hp.
The X1 E84 debuted in the US market only in 2013.
Restyling, Enhancements
In 2012 and 2014, the BMW X1 underwent facelifts, during which the front and rear bumpers were redesigned, the front and rear lights were replaced, several new options were added, and the front air intakes were slightly modified.
In 2015, the second generation F48 model was introduced. The X1 was now divided into the 2 Active Tourer series with front-wheel drive and the same with all-wheel drive. The exterior of the car also changed, with a wider field of view due to expanded windows. The characteristic grilles increased in size, but they no longer serve as air intakes.
Although the body was shortened, the interior is more ergonomic and spacious, and the dashboard has been modernized and improved. The trunk gained a whole 85 liters compared to the first generation, and after folding the seats, it acquires a whopping 1550 liters — 200 more than its predecessor.
