About the Model
The German BMW Group rightfully holds one of the top positions in the world. Cars from this Bavarian giant have become a dream for millions of drivers. In terms of production volume, the group noticeably lags behind Toyota, Nissan, and other mass producers. This can be easily explained. The price tag on Bavarian brand cars is quite high. For most ordinary people, a «beemer from the showroom» is simply unaffordable.
However, the high price is justified by the superb quality of the cars. Owners' comments are mostly positive. This is also confirmed by the reviews of the BMW M5. Drivers praise the car more than they criticize it.
Review of BMW M5: The Perfect Machine
I have owned the car for 3 years. The car is getting old, but I don't even consider selling it. For me, it's the perfect machine. Starting my review of the BMW M5 with basic information:
- E39 body;
- 4.9 MT modification;
- 400 horsepower under the hood;
- year of manufacture 2003.
I bought the car second-hand. The Bavarian is agile, accelerates instantly. So finding something similar is difficult. There is an abundance of junk on the market. After a couple of months of searching and viewing «accident-free and unrepainted» options, we finally found our choice. I had to travel to a neighboring region to get the car. Drove it back to my hometown for 800 km.
The initial impressions of the highway trip were perfect. The car meets all the standards for driving enthusiasts:
- Distinctive engine roar.
- Excellent sound insulation.
- Comfortable seats.
- Various seat adjustment options.
- Responsiveness to steering commands.
- Short shifts when changing gears.
In fact, one could write praises about the car endlessly. I fell in love with the car during the first drive. Despite its age, the car exudes luxury, power, and quality. Everything in the interior is designed for maximum driver comfort. The shifting is simple, and you get used to the placement of sensors and buttons instantly.
The car's speed is a separate story. It accelerates quickly, making the highway trip a true pleasure. It brakes promptly. Initially, I would accelerate up to 230 and then reduce the speed to 120. The sensations were incredible. After getting used to the car, I stopped engaging in such races.
In my review of the BMW M5, I want to note that a few days after returning home, I noticed a significant oil loss. It turned out that this phenomenon is quite normal for this model. It consumes up to a liter of oil per 1000 km.
The car is manageable yet smooth. It's comfortable to drive. Initially, I expected it to be very stiff when I bought it, but that belief was not justified.
Fuel consumption is ambiguous. The situation largely depends on the driving style:
- Calm city driving consumes 13 liters per 100 km;
- On the highway with cruise control, it's 9-10 liters;
- With constant abrupt accelerations and stops, it can go up to 20 liters.
In general, my review of the BMW M5 is positive. The car evokes emotions. It's worth paying for the experience.
BMW M5 is More Than Just a Car
There are few reviews of the BMW M5, so I'll add my two cents. Firstly, I'll explain the minimum comments. The car is powerful and expensive to maintain. Many simply cannot afford such a pleasure. I managed to do it. I bought it and have no regrets.
I've been driving the BMW M5 E60 for 2 years now. It's the 5.0 AMT modification. The power unit delivers an incredible 507 horsepower.
Let's start with the engine. It's a naturally aspirated engine without compressors or turbos. The sound it produces is unbelievable. It feels like you're behind an F1 race car. To many, the car's acoustics even resemble a sports motorcycle. It only accepts 10W60 oil. Here are a couple of tips for drivers:
- The car consumes oil. Topping up constantly is normal.
- Monitor the temperature closely. Lubrication should not exceed 120 degrees.
- Before buying, make sure to diagnose the engine. Maintenance is not cheap. Repairing or buying a new engine is even more expensive.
- After purchase, it's advisable to bleed the vanos system just in case. This needs to be done with any engine work (chip tuning).
- I don't recommend using Castrol oil. It's not great, but it's a matter of personal preference.
The car's handling is top-notch. Manufacturers have included 3 driving modes, allowing any driver to find the perfect one for themselves. In my BMW M5 review, I recommend using the stiffest mode sparingly. The car in this mode feels more like a go-kart.
Overall, the suspension is reliable. However, one must align their driving style with the road quality in the region.
Now let's talk about the pain points. The problem with this car lies in the costs. Maintenance is very expensive:
- Expensive insurance and taxes (hello, 507 horsepower);
- High maintenance costs (you'll have to pay around 30,000 for a single front strut);
- Fuel consumption is simply enormous (on average, I consume about 15 liters per 100 km);
- Some parts are prone to high failure rates (the clutch of this car can be considered a consumable).
Based on my driving experience, the clutch wears out between 10-90,000 km. I consistently replace it 2-3 times a year. The pleasure is somewhat limited.
