Premium-class crossovers: Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2

In the market, subcompact premium-class crossovers appeared relatively recently. Nevertheless, this does not hinder the segment's rapid development. In 2017, two popular corporations — the German BMW and the British Jaguar — released their models: Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2.

Exterior Design

When choosing between these models, it is worth paying attention to their exterior first. The design of the German crossover looks like a B-Class hatchback that has been slightly pumped up. The front features the iconic fake radiator grille. The headlights look predatory and aggressive, and the bumper is stylish.

The wheel arches are pronounced, with the company logos on the rear pillars. The combination of the sloping roof with the rising window lines turned out to be successful. This design indicates the speed and dynamism of the car.

The British model underwent a facelift in 2020. It is logical to assume that their designs would resonate, but the E-Pace's appearance is more reminiscent of the F-Type sports car. The car's exterior is quite attractive. The profile looks much more appealing than that of its German competitor. Moreover, the car itself appears larger.

The dimensions of the German model: 4,395 x 1,984 x 1,649. The wheelbase is 2,681 mm, and the ground clearance is 182 mm. The British model: 4,360 x 1,824 x 1,526, with a wheelbase of 2,670 and a ground clearance of 204 mm.

Interior of Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2

In the debate between Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2, the German car loses on design. The interior almost entirely copies the X1 model. Yes, it is good, but something new was expected.

Everything on the dashboard is accessible and easy to read, with a multifunctional steering wheel. The dashboard is traditionally oriented towards the driver, housing a multimedia system with a touchscreen display, audio and climate control. The finishing materials are high-class, befitting the car's status. Owners particularly appreciate the soft plastic of the front dashboard, stitched with threads.

The driver and front passenger seats have a sporty design and various adjustments. To lower the center of gravity, the seats had to be lowered by 20 mm, but this did not affect their reliability for the driver. Manufacturers did not consider tall passengers — the rear row is tight in length and width. However, there is enough headroom, especially compared to the British model. The cargo space volume is 470 liters, and a maximum of 1,355 liters when folded.

In the comparison between Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2, it is important to note that the British model looks less sporty, but more original. The instruments on the panel are also easily readable. There is a touchscreen multimedia control monitor. Below are buttons for climate control and additional controls.

The front seats are also comfortable, with adjustment buttons, and the seating position is higher than that of the competitor. The rear seats are also more comfortable — longer and wider. However, tall passengers will find it uncomfortable in this model. The trunk space is taken up by the spare wheel, but it is still larger than that of the German model — 484 liters and 1,234 liters with the seats folded.

Technical Specifications

BMW offers 3 types of engines for this model. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine, sDrive18i, capable of delivering 140 horsepower and accelerating to 100 km in 9.6 seconds. The maximum speed will be 205 km/h, with a fuel consumption of just 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers in a combined cycle.

The xDtive20i also runs on gasoline. The 2-liter engine has a power of 192 horsepower. It accelerates to 100 km in 7.4 seconds, with a maximum speed of 224 kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption is 6.5 liters in a combined cycle.

The 2-liter diesel engine xDrive20d delivers 190 horsepower. The maximum speed is 219 kilometers per hour, accelerating to a hundred in 7.7 seconds. It will take about 4.8 liters for 100 km in a combined cycle. The transmission can be a 7-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic.

Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2 have equally good dynamics. However, BMW's handling is much better. On the other hand, the British model is better insulated from noise.

Prices of Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2

For a BMW, you will have to pay from 2 million 70 thousand rubles. The Jaguar will cost 2 million 540 thousand. Meanwhile, the basic equipment of both models includes approximately the same functionality: heated seats, a leather multifunction steering wheel, rain sensors, a stereo system, climate control, and much more.

Conclusion

When comparing Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2, it is worth choosing the British model. Its versatility, good road behavior, and off-road quality speak in its favor. BMW, on the other hand, is considered a car that does not tolerate compromises. The owner will have to overlook the stiff suspension and low noise insulation.
