Full review of the BMW X1 E84

The BMW X1 E84 was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008. In the middle of October the following year, the compact model began serial production in Leipzig. The North American market received cars from Mexico. The Asian market received them from India and China. Russia started assembly in 2012 at the Kaliningrad plant.

In 2015, the cars were updated to the second generation — E48.

Exterior of BMW X1 E84

The exterior design, according to users' reviews, is ambiguous. The 3-Series was used as the platform for creating the cars. German engineers standardized all elements to be able to influence the reduction of the car's cost.

• Mirrored side elements for rearview, with body-colored, electrically operated mirrors.
• Cars with LED turn signals, which are also located in the mirror housings. Bavarians offer many optional forms without requiring additional payment.
• Fog lighting is provided in standard models as well. Because tall cars cannot illuminate road clearances with just stock optical devices. Therefore, fog lights serve to provide maximum visibility in insufficient lighting conditions.
• Sporting suspension elements give cars confidence on winding roads and good road surfaces. Thanks to the Xdrive systems, one can easily control the vehicle even under poor road conditions.

Theoretically, the BMW X1 E84 is called a crossover. In reality, they are all-wheel-drive passenger cars. This statement is made by car owners. Because classic BMW models have a low seating position, while in these models everything is at a height. Therefore, it is very easy to survey the surrounding car environment. Thanks to their compact size, the cars have good maneuverability.

Interior Features

The BMW X1 E84 cars have exceptional interiors. They are almost all «treasures.» Only the displays are integrated into the dashboards at the width of the seats, whereas in the «treasures» they are standalone.

• The decor is immaculate, with elements of wood gloss and plastic on top/bottom.
• Firm/soft three-spoke multifunction steering wheels with quick heating and comfortable grip.
• Users note the comfort of the seats, even in standard variants. Comfort is felt in sporty configurations.
• Knees have extendable bolsters, seats have reinforced side support.
• Driver's seats can be adjusted mechanically in 8 directions.
• The glove compartment is spacious. If the front seats are moved forward, otherwise, the knees will hit. Passenger seats are adjustable in 11 positions.
• Trunk compartments with 420 liters. When folding the seats in the second row, it can reach 1350 liters.

Without drawbacks, even from the manufacturer, it was not without them. In the BMW X1 E84, the suspensions cannot be controlled. Europeans do not suffer from this, as they have very good road surfaces. But for our compatriots, the stiff suspensions can be challenging.

Electronic Safety Features

• The BMW X1 E84 cars have excellent safety levels. Standard configurations are equipped with six airbags. Two are side airbags in the front seatbacks.
• Curtains protect heads.
• Child seats are attached with Isofix.

Standard equipment includes several important mechanisms:

1. For dynamic stability/traction control of the car — DSC/DTC.
2. ABS (anti-lock braking system) with CBC, which controls braking during turns. When drivers press the brakes sharply on corners, the mechanism is triggered.
3. Mechanisms for hill descent.

In 2011, cars were awarded five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests.

Technological Component

All cars come with different powertrains.

Petrol Engines

With 4 cylinders, 2.0 L, with 150 hp. Acceleration — 9.7 sec/100 km. Top speed — 202 km/h. Fuel consumption is 8.2 L/100 km. CO2 emissions — 191 g/km. The 18i crossovers operate with six-speed manual transmissions.

Important! Six-speed Steptronic automatics are available for an additional charge.

Other turbocharged engines — 2.0 L, with 184 hp, acceleration from 7.4 to 7.8 sec. Maximum speed from 220 to 215 km/h, fuel consumption from 7.1 to 7.7 L. CO2 emissions from 165 to 179 g/km. Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive cars operate on such engines. They are paired with fast manual transmissions. Optionally, you can order eight-speed Steptronic automatics.

The flagship models are cars with turbocharged engines of 2.0 L, with 245 hp, acceleration of 6.1 sec/100 km, with Valvetronic mechanism. Top speed — 240 km/h, fuel consumption — 7.9 L/100 km, CO2 emissions of 183 g/km. They work with 6-speed manual transmissions, optionally, with 8-speed automatics.

Diesel Engines

There are two types of engines in the cars. They have Common Rail fuel systems and intelligent turbochargers. These are third-generation systems.

Some engines have 184 hp. The second type has 218 hp. They work with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. Acceleration of one/second — 8.1 and 6.8 sec. Top speeds of 215 and 230 km/h, with fuel consumption per 100 km of 5.5 and 5.9 L. CO2 emissions of 145 and 154 g/km.

Russian users did not receive three-liter installations.

The fuel tanks contain 61 liters each.

Oils are changed regularly. Everything is tailored to the engine types. Usually, global manufacturers are used: Mobil, Shell, Castrol, etc. 5.2 liters are poured into the cars. For the transfer and for the automatics, BMW 83 22 9 407 858 transmission oils "ATF D-III are used. If they are unavailable, they can be replaced with any Dexron III. For GM/ZF automatics, Dexron VI/SHELL ATF M 1375.4 or ZF Lifeguard 6 will do.

• The suspension elements in the 2011 cars are side, independent, two-arm MacPhersons in the front and multi-link in the rear.
• Steering with Servotronic adaptive boosts.
• The wheels have disc brakes with ventilation and ABS mechanisms.

Restyling and Pre-Restyling

In 2012, during the summer months, the BMW X1 E84 models underwent restyling operations.

• The exterior was changed.
• The front optics were switched to xenon, the rear to LEDs.
• The fog lights received new trims.
• The grilles became a different shape and size.
• The front bumpers lost the rough plastic decoration at the bottom.
• Turn signal indicators were added to the mirrors.
• The cars started to look impressive due to the wheels.
• The lower parts of the cars were fitted with overlays and shiny sills.
• The ground clearance changed and is now 17.9 cm.
• Now, 2.0 diesel engines can be used.

These measures can also be supplemented with tuning. This way, fuel consumption will decrease, and engine power will increase. Also, car enthusiasts use kess equipment.

4. Cars with stiff suspensions.

6. No jacks and spare tires. Oil noises and engine temperature sensors are missing.
