The BMW M3 Evolution II E30 is a limited edition of the BMW M3 E30. The cars were produced in 1988. The M3 Evolution is the official model named in 1987 after the release of 505 cars with the first BMW M3 Evolution I. However, Motorsport did not distinguish these versions gradually. Only 500 cars were produced in 1988.
What is the BMW E30 M30
The car was presented in Frankfurt in 1985 and went into production in 1986.
The basis for the future cars was the BMW E30 model, which the Bavarians further enhanced, resulting in cars with new sports coupes.
They featured:
- Wide arches.
- Large fender flares.
- The rear window had a gentle slope, which contributed to good aerodynamics.
They were equipped with S14 B23 engines, with 2.3 liters and 195 hp. These cars could accelerate in 6.7 sec/100 km. The maximum speed was 230 km/h.
In addition to the first model, developers created the Evolution 1 and 2 and Sport Evolution concepts. They almost entirely refined the base version.
In the Sport model, the engine was completely replaced with a 2.5-liter one. The acceleration time was 6.5 sec/100 km. The maximum speed reached up to 250 km/h.
Since the start of production, the assembly line has produced 786 cars. Convertibles were considered the fastest. Today, these models are the rarest and most sought-after by collectors.
When it comes to BMW spare parts, the conversation takes a positive turn. This also applies to the engines. Users claim that they are built with a high degree of reliability. What happens in reality needs to be explored.

Design Features
In the Evolution 1 cars, the cylinder blocks were revised. For the 2nd version of the cars and Sport, a thorough overhaul was carried out.
New exhaust systems were added to the second version of the cars. Compression ratio was increased to enhance power, reaching 215 hp.
The BMW M3 Evolution II came with standard 225/45ZR16 wheels.
In the M3 E30, they were offered as a separate option.
Green stripes were added to the windshields of the cars.
Exterior
The BMW M3 Evolution II cars were equipped with:
- Deep bumpers;
- Additional rear spoilers on the trunk lids;
- Air intakes for brake cooling instead of fog lights;
- The glass surfaces were slimmed down and made lightweight;
- The trunk lids, like the bumpers, also shed their weight.
For car enthusiasts, they offered models with the bodies of three exclusive editions:
- Red Misano.
- Blue metallic Macao.
- Silver metallic Nagaro.
Interior
There was a slight redesign in the interiors of the BMW 3 Evolution cars.
- The front and rear seats were adorned with M tricolor lapels, similar to those in the M 535i and E28, M5 E28.
- Sills and footrests with M3 inscriptions were installed.
- Special boards were attached to the cars, each representing one of the 500 units produced in a specific quantity.
Engine Units of BMW E30 Evolution
Before characterizing the Evolution 1 and 2 engines, let's recall the technological features of the main unit. The main engines were six-cylinder units.
They had classic specifications:
- With ignition distributors.
- With camshafts (1 piece).
- The units were produced with a low compression ratio. They could use fuel with any octane number. Therefore, the production of turbocharged engines did not require any special modifications.
The M30 models were sold in various modifications, including sporty ones. Car enthusiasts in our country prefer the 34 and 32 bodies, which lead in the M series.
The BMW E30 Evolution 1 and 2 cars significantly differ in their engines.
The S14 engine underwent significant mechanical upgrades in the BMW 3 Evolution 2.
- The compression ratios transitioned from 10.5:1 to 11:1.
- The air intakes were improved.
- Lightweight flywheels were installed.
- The engine management was altered.
- As a result of the changes, the engine compartments housed engines with a power of 217 hp and torque of 244 Nm.
The transmission remained unchanged. They were five-speed manual gearboxes. The BMW 3 Evolution was succeeded by the BMW M3 Sport Evolution E30.
Successors to the E30: Enter the E36 Cars
The first model was successful, leading to the need for full-scale production. In 1992, cars began rolling out in E36 bodies. The model was presented in Paris as a coupe, and by 1994, convertibles and sedans were introduced.
Initially, the cars were equipped with an inline six, 3.0 engine with 286 hp. Later, they switched to a 3.2 inline six with 231 hp. These cars were also labeled as Evolution. They could accelerate in 5.5 sec/100 km, with a top speed of 250 km/h.
In 1996, cars were already available with ZF automatic transmissions. Production of this modification ceased in 1999.
The BMW M3 E46
In 2000, the M3 with the E46 body was introduced. The cars were powered by inline 3.2-liter engines named S54B32, producing 343 hp.
The E46 shed 100 kg in weight. The cars could accelerate in 5.3 sec/100 km and had a top speed of 250 km/h.
In 2001, the M3 Convertible was introduced. These cars featured soft-top convertible roofs. However, the design feature led to increased weight. The model was produced until the fall of 2006 when it was succeeded by the E90.
E90/92/93 Series
The presentation took place in 2007.
Each body was indexed as follows:
- E90 — sedans.
- E92 — coupes.
- E93 — convertibles with hardtops.
The coupes differed from sedans in front and rear optical devices. The sedans had front lights. These were two-door models.
The M3 received the following upgrades with this generation:
- A maximum speed of 330 km/h.
- Eight-cylinder engines, with 4.0 liters.
- Two transmission options: a six-speed manual and a 7-speed robot.
- The suspensions were improved.
- Aluminum hoods were installed.
- Plastic roofs were added to the coupes.
F30
These cars are considered the latest generation. Only sedans remain. Coupes and convertibles moved to the M4 line. Atmospheric engines are no longer present.
Now the engines feature twin turbochargers. They have 431 hp, accelerate in 4.3 sec to 100 km/h, with a top speed of 250 km/h.
Conclusion
When discussing the successors, the most important series of BMW cars that began production in 1982, clear stylistic echoes of that time can be traced. Although the new models have and continue to receive distinct dynamic designs. The variety of modifications falls within the years 1982—1991.
They were produced in:
- Two and four-door sedans;
- Convertibles;
- Phaetons;
- Sporty variants.
The M3 cars were sold as both two-door sedans and convertibles. In 1985, when the BMW 325IX was released, cars with all-wheel drive were offered, followed by the phaeton.
